TWO PROMINENT INDUSTRY EXPERTS JOIN AQUAPORIN'S NEW ESTABLISHED AMBASSADOR CORPS
May 2009

Aquaporin has successfully signed up its first two Ambassadors to join the company’s independent Ambassador Corps established May 2009. Both are esteemed and respected scientists and opinion makers in the water technology industry.

Nobel Laureate Peter Agre was rewarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of aquaporins. This discovery paved the way for a multitude of biochemical, physiological and genetic studies of water channels, and today Aquaporin is exploring the commercial use of Peter Agre’s finding through its unique Aquaporin membrane technology.

  • “Pure water is one of the world’s most precious resources. Thus, development of new methods for water purification is a major challenge. Combining aquaporins, nature’s own water purifiers, with 21st century nanotechnologies may provide the direction to meet this challenge”

    Peter Agre
University Professor and Director of Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, USA

The other Ambassador, globally renowned Anthony Fane, is an international expert in membrane technology and currently heads the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre which focuses on important aspects of water technology within the development of membranes.

  • “Membrane technology will be the key to water purification for a thirsty planet. We have much to learn from nature’s water transporting aquaporins. The incorporation of aquaporins into synthetic membranes promises a paradigm shift in membrane technology for water purification”

    Anthony Fane
University Professor and Director of the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre

The parties have signed a voluntary, non-profit agreement on membership in the impartial Aquaporin Ambassador Corps, which intends to constitute a powerful group of volunteers devoting their time and utilising their reputation to support Aquaporin’s activities within the water technology business.

The mission of the Ambassador Corps is to foster and promote the development of the Aquaporin water membrane technology by having Ambassadors spread the news of Aquaporin’s activities in a positive manner whenever relevant, thereby supporting an industrial acceptance of the biomimetic Aquaporin water membrane technology within the water industry.

Aquaporin plans to extend the Ambassador Corps with other significant industry experts in the near future.

INVESTING DKK 37 MILLION TO OBTAIN THE PUREST WATER IN THE WORLD
April 2007

Aquaporin A/S, a Danish industrial biotech company, has received capital funds to complete development of a technologically advanced membrane for purifying water for industrial purposes. Contributing the capital funds were Danish Investment Company M. Goldschmidt Capital A/S and Syddansk Teknologisk Innovation A/S.

Aquaporin will apply the capital funds to complete the development of a unique, revolutionary water filtration technology, expectedly by 2010. The goal is to create the purest water in the world for industrial purposes. Based on the water channels of living cells, the new technology will be the world’s first to result in 100% water purification.

As a result of the capital contribution, M. Goldschmidt Capital’s Chairman, Hans Henrik Hallager, and its COO, Søren Bjørn Hansen, will join the Aquaporin board of directors. Syddansk Teknologisk Innovation will be represented on the board by its Head of Investment, Michael Frank.

"Aquaporin has undergone some exciting changes over the last two years that enabled it to reach some essential milestones. The company is now ready to accelerate its evolution, and we believe this opportunity to ensure the company’s momentum together with M. Goldschmidt Capital is very attractive," said Michael Frank.

More than USD 300 billion market
The global market for water purification is estimated to be worth more than USD 300 billion, and Aquaporin believes that its membrane technology has enormous potential. The company is initially concentrating on developing a membrane for producing ultra pure water for industrial purposes, i.e. the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, computer chips and flat screens, among other things. The market for products used to produce ultra pure water is estimated to be worth more than USD 3 billion worldwide.

"Aquaporin’s technology has extremely promising business potential, and it is also very important in a global perspective. Initially, we will work with Teknologisk Innovation to help fully develop the technology. In the next phase, M. Goldschmidt Capital will, subject to certain assumptions and conditions, contribute additional capital towards commercialising the technology," said Søren Bjørn Hansen.

Aquaporin A/S: A ground-breaking Danish industrial biotech company
Headquartered in Lyngby north of Copenhagen, Aquaporin was founded in 2005 by Morten Østergaard Jensen and Peter Holme Jensen. The company is committed to revolutionising water purification through "white biotech", i.e. bionanotechnology, a high-tech field in which Denmark has taken an early global lead. Aquaporin specialises in developing a highly water-selective membrane.

"Quite simply, we want to copy Nature’s water filtration method. Our technology is based on the water channels in living cells, and it will be the first water purification technology in the world to purify water 100%," said Jensen, who is CEO of Aquaporin.

The technology will be developed in a three-year EU project in cooperation with a number of European industrial and academic partners. Aquaporin has been the prime mover in this EU project, which is coordinated by DHI.

Syddansk Teknologisk Innovation A/S: A leading Danish innovation environment
Syddansk Teknologisk Innovation A/S is owned by the Danish Technological Institute, an innovation environment approved by the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Syddansk Teknologisk Innovation’s mission is to invest in innovative business ideas in the seed phase.

M. Goldschmidt Capital A/S: A proactive new investment company
M. Goldschmidt Capital was founded early 2007 as a subsidiary of the M. Goldschmidt Holding Group. The company executes and manages the group’s direct investments in small and medium-sized Danish businesses. The Aquaporin investment is M. Goldschmidt Capital’s third, and its first venture capital investment.
